World Ocean Day 2022: Why We Celebrate World Ocean Day Every 8 June

8 June of every year happens to be World Oceans Day. Every lover of nature around the globe takes this celebration seriously as it stands to be a remarkable one. But why do we celebrate our ocean every 8 June? Why is this celebration an important one? What is the theme of World Ocean Day 2022? This article holds answers to these questions.

Why Oceans are important to Humanity

The ocean is a vital part of Earth. In fact, the presence of oceans around us has helped in sustaining humanity and keeping us alive. If our oceans eventually dry up, life may cease to exist on Earth. This is to say that we cannot do without the oceans.

Oceans covered up to 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. So they help in transporting heat from the equator to the poles. Hence the oceans have helped to regulate our weather patterns and climate change with the rate of their heat transfer.

Scientists revealed that the oceans generate more than half of the world’s oxygen. They also absorb carbon dioxide 50 times more than our atmosphere. This is to say that the oceans are part of the reasons we are still surviving on the planet, healthy and sound. So we have every reason to celebrate our oceans for sustaining us all this while.

What’s More? The role of oceans in sustaining life on earth could be traced back to 540 million years ago. During this period, the first human ancestor emerged as a bag-like sea creator that moved around the ocean by their wriggling.

Scientists suggest that this bag-like creator has a large mouth without an anus. Over the years, the microscopic back-like creator began to evolve until humankind came into existence. So while the first human ancestor needed assistance, the oceans were there to sustain them, and are still here to sustain us.

So we should not destroy the oceans or pollute them because we want to build factors and make financial profits. If the oceans could give humans a surviving platform to live for millions of years, we should give back to nature by taking good care of the ocean.

So this is why we celebrate worlds ocean day, as a reminder that we should all look out to our ocean and protect their environment from destruction.

Why Do We Celebrate World Ocean Day?

Since we have learned why the ocean is so important to humanity, 8 June of every year is specifically mapped out to celebrate the oceans around us. This celebration is so important to remind us about the role of the oceans in keeping us alive and sustaining our livelihoods.

So we have to celebrate this day to show respect to the oceans for having sustained humans since our existence on this planet. Union Nations (UN) revealed that the oceans are the lungs of the earth and also the main source of food and medicine. This implies that the oceans play countless roles in keeping us alive.

History of World Ocean Day

The history of world ocean day could be traced back to 1992 when the Oceans Institute of Canada raised the idea of celebrating the global ocean day during the Earth Conference of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).

After the idea was pitched, the UNCED deliberated on it for a while. Later in 2008, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to map out 8 June of every year as World Oceans Day. In 2009, the first inaugural observance was made with respect to the World Ocean Day celebration.

The theme of this first celebration was named ‘Our Ocean, Our Responsibility.’ Ever since then, the world has continued to celebrate World Ocean Day. This celebration has come to stay, as it will continue to remind us of the importance of our oceans in our lives.

World Oceans Day 2022 Theme

Almost every year, the theme of World Oceans Day changes. The World Ocean Day 2022 Theme is “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.” This theme is created to inspire us to take collection action in cleaning and protecting our oceans from destruction.

Keep in mind that when we pollute the oceans or litter them with plastics, we are indirectly contributing to the destruction. So you must play a role in protecting our oceans as they continue to keep us alive.

What You Can Do To Support The Oceans

If you live close to the seashores, create awareness and encourage people to stop dumping refuse into the ocean. Make them see the dangers associated with the destruction of the oceans.
